Setting The Stage
Frost stated, "It's tone I'm in love with; that's what poetry is, tone." "That tone is everything, the way you say that 'no.' (Job in The Masque of Reason).
Tone is the manner in which a poet makes his statement about his attitude toward the subject. Tone pervades the entire poem - emotional colouring and influencing the reader.
Response Stance
In Whitman’s elegy and Angelou’s social commentary, the poets imply that if the universe were just, the death of their “captain” and the social injustice would not occur. Highlight lines that resonate with you in their emotional tone.
Invite students to relook at the poems with the lens of specificity, intentionality, and audience. Does the author have an intended audience and, if so, what is the message they specify using the craft of poetry?

hi this is brittany
ReplyDeleteIt felt like Walt Whitman like Abraham Lincoln a lot and made him his hero and father
I think the poem was about how they beat the civil war yet abraham linkin still died from john wilks booth. I think Walt Whithman was trying to explain how he thinks that abraham was a very good person for stoping slayvary but still got murdered by john wilks booth.
ReplyDeleteHi its me again Hailey....
ReplyDeleteO Captain! My Captain! is a sad poem because Whitman loved Lincoln as a father, and looked up to him as a captain and when he got shot he was very sad because it was like losing a family member for him. He always says fallen cold and dead because he is trying to make a point that Lincoln is dead.
Hi my name is Shelby. The poem O Captain My Captain. I think is sad, sweet romantic.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Kiley, The poem O captain my captain is a really melancholy its sweet and how much Walt Whitman cares about Abraham Lincoln
ReplyDeleteWell i think that this is a sad poem because whitman thought that he's important to him and everyone else.Besides there was lot's of sorrow and sadness for Lincoln's death too.
ReplyDeleteHi it’s Chloe. In the poem O Captain My Captain. It is melancholic and emotional.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Thon W. and what I think of the poem O Captain My Captian is that in the first stanza he was really sad, because the only thing he had close to a father had just died so he couldn't stand it. Wahat I think of the second stanza is that everyone really wanted him back but they couldn't get him back because he was dead, and they were talking about how he couldn't see that they won the civil war because he was dead. What I think about the last stanza is thathow again he was dead and he couldn't see that they won, and explaining that he was dead.Good Bye and good night all readers.
ReplyDeletehi my name is Melissa E.
ReplyDeleteI like this peom because it can be really sad but it can remind you to be kind to people when they are there.
Cause one day they may not be there.
I think whitmans poem is a sad poem because he uses sad paragraphs and very strong words like fallen cold and dead and bleeding drops of red.
I think walt whitmans tone for this peom is a strong tone and a sad tone.
the tone of the poem called, "o captain! my captain!" walt whitman is really sad because the guy he is talking about is Abreham Lincon and he is like a father to him and he died in the movie theater right before the war ended.
ReplyDeletethe first stanza he was really sad. he said, "O the bleeding drops of red."
in the second stanza he is telling him to wake up because the people at the shore are cheering for him and he is telling him to hear the bells ringing because they have victory.
the third and last stanza is where he talks about how he doesn't wake up and he calls him a father because he is depressed that he is his hero. he talks about how he cannot feel him.

ReplyDeleteHi my name is Tristan.
ReplyDeletei like the grasshopper poem because it kind of cool and it kind of doesn't make sense.
But it kind of cool how it jump back and forth make me want to read more e.e.cumming peoms.
I think caged bird is a good poem because it's cool and o captin, o captin is good because that whitman guy thought that abraham lincoln was is hero and more like his father.
ReplyDeleteI thought the raven was about a man who had a wife and she died somehow and hes depresed. inexpectivly a raven comes and keeps telling him nevermore and the guy gets mad and calls him evil and a prophet.I think it was a pretty good poem.
