Setting The Stage
According to Atwell (2006), a metaphor takes two things and claims they are the same. The success of a metaphor depends on two things. First, is it fresh? Surprising? There is a difference between a metaphor and a cliché. Phrases such as snow white or ice cold, have been used exhaustively and therefore no longer give rise to a mental image. Secondly, a good metaphor conveys tone: it shows how the poet or speaker feels about a topic.
In his poetry, Langston Hughes often uses metaphor to reveal the role of dreams in life.

ReplyDeleteTo me it ment that it was about freedom and the challenges in life that some people had to go to. To me freedom is the right to talk to people and have the same rights as them , we all deserve the same rights as other and should not be beittle by out apperance or mental ability. I say just because your a diffrent colour gives people no right to judge them on there personlality.

The voice of the poem called Richard Cory was a person on the street selling items for the money for their families. This person said that everyone liked him because he was slim and very rich. They said when he talked he sounded human!

ReplyDeleteI think the poem an afternoon in the stacks was if you were right in the middle of the book and its getting good so you can't put it down and now your suposed to and you really want to read it but now you can't so the book is haunting you. Thats what I think it means.

I like the poem dreams because it does a good job on giving you an image of what is about. i like the words that are used to describe dreams. the way he used metaphors is good cause it gives me a clear picture like a normal book would.
ReplyDeleteHello, My name is Olivia
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the poem 'Harlem' By Langston Hughes. I find it interesting how he explores the subject of dreams. In 'Harlem' he talks about how dreams can either prosper or die, and how dreams may seem sweet at the time, but can turn bitter, and become a burden. It really makes you think about yourself, and the question that is 'What is a dream?'
well..it's kind of sad, about the whole dieing dream thing. the bird is symbolic of life, which is sort of depressing, if you think about it, because a "broken winged bid that can not fly" will probily get eaten by a cat, or something, which kind of is like your life die's so, ya. goodbye.
ReplyDeleteIn Langston Hughes's poem "Dreams" I find it positive that it talks about having dreams, and how it gives you something to look forward to, and without dreams it seems to say how you are not really going anywhere. With the metaphors "Life is a broken-wing bird that cannot fly" and "Life is a barren field, frozen snow" I find really depressing and some negative, but I think it has a good meaning.
ReplyDeleteI liked Langston Hughes poem "Dreams", because I feel like I can relate.
ReplyDeleteI think it could come off as a negative poem, but once you read it a few times you can see the positive side of it. What I get from this poem is that dreams are something that you really need to follow and believe in, because if you don't, then you may have missed a chance you may never get again.
He uses the metaphor "For if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly." I think this means that dreams are meant to be followed through, or else they were pointless to begin with.
I guess this poem is kind of depressing, but in a happy way. If that makes sense.
I like robert frost's poem the poem made me think of making choices and it made me think of autumn and the leaves flying every where.
ReplyDeleteI really like how Robert Frost uses descriptive
ReplyDeletewords in his poems.
like in his poem
"The Road Not Taken
when he uses "Because it was grassy and
wanted wear;
I realy like all the description that made me have a clear picture in my mind.
ReplyDeleteI think Robert Frost means that at first he was sad then at the end he knew that he chose the right.
ReplyDeleteI think the author is writing about how the poem is similar to making choices in life, and making the right choices.
ReplyDeleteI like how robert frost said that there is a difference between those two paths.
ReplyDeleteI think that he is talking about the decisions in life and you should thing about it first and make sure it is the right one
ReplyDeleteI like how he was comparing it to his life
ReplyDeleteand choices he makes because of the two paths he was talking about.
I like Robert Frost's poem "The road not taken" because he is comparing his life to the two paths and he chose "The path less taken"
ReplyDeleteThe race track because I have a decision between the left and the right. The right is bumpy and the left you have to turn on to the other side.
ReplyDeletewhy did mrs.frost compar the two paths to his life. why dident he compar somthing eles.
ReplyDeleteThe poem Mr.frost wrote is talking about making choices in life.
ReplyDeleteThe poem about the sunflowers is pretty cool because it shows the sunflowers having a conversation about the weather so that kind of also makes it funny
