Figurative Language – Personification

Setting The Stage
Personification is a way for a poet to enter the world of metaphor. It is a trope in which abstractions, animals, ideas, and inanimate objects are given human character, traits, abilities, or reactions. Personification is particularly common in poetry, but it appears in nearly all types of artful writing.

Talking flowers and singing rain! Impossible - unless they are part of a William Blake's or Langston Hughes' poem.

Response Stance
How does personification allows the reader to sense more of the emotion the poet tries to create and share?

Personification in poetry conveys and emphasizes unusual and vivid images. The use of strong word association in personification changes the mode of thought and adds variation, embellishment and adornment to poetic and literary works. Invite students to personify inanimate objects in their writing of poetry, while considering:
  • How do you want the reader to feel about your inanimate object?
  • What mood or tone are you trying to create in the poem as a whole? As writers of poetry, one must be careful to choose the appropriate emotions/sensations/actions/physical attributes for the object that would convey the desired feeling, mood and tone.

The poem that Blake wrote was good and had a lot of personifcation in the poem. Blake said he was alone. Blake's poems are the same topic as the poems by Robert Frost.
