Figurative Language - Metaphor

Setting The Stage
According to Atwell (2006), a metaphor takes two things and claims they are the same. The success of a metaphor depends on two things. First, is it fresh? Surprising? There is a difference between a metaphor and a cliché. Phrases such as snow white or ice cold, have been used exhaustively and therefore no longer give rise to a mental image. Secondly, a good metaphor conveys tone: it shows how the poet or speaker feels about a topic.

In his poetry, Langston Hughes often uses metaphor to reveal the role of dreams in life.

  21. To me it ment that it was about freedom and the challenges in life that some people had to go to. To me freedom is the right to talk to people and have the same rights as them , we all deserve the same rights as other and should not be beittle by out apperance or mental ability. I say just because your a diffrent colour gives people no right to judge them on there personlality.

I like how the poet expresses himself by repeating Can I Catch The Wind. The poet wants the reader to remember that the wind is everywhere but you cannot catch it. He sess if he can catch the wind with different things, but he cannot.

  39. Hello, My name is Olivia

I enjoyed the poem 'Harlem' By Langston Hughes. I find it interesting how he explores the subject of dreams. In 'Harlem' he talks about how dreams can either prosper or die, and how dreams may seem sweet at the time, but can turn bitter, and become a burden. It really makes you think about yourself, and the question that is 'What is a dream?'

    ReplyDelete
  40. well..it's kind of sad, about the whole dieing dream thing. the bird is symbolic of life, which is sort of depressing, if you think about it, because a "broken winged bid that can not fly" will probily get eaten by a cat, or something, which kind of is like your life die's so, ya. goodbye.

  41. In Langston Hughes's poem "Dreams" I find it positive that it talks about having dreams, and how it gives you something to look forward to, and without dreams it seems to say how you are not really going anywhere. With the metaphors "Life is a broken-wing bird that cannot fly" and "Life is a barren field, frozen snow" I find really depressing and some negative, but I think it has a good meaning.

  42. I liked Langston Hughes poem "Dreams", because I feel like I can relate.

I think it could come off as a negative poem, but once you read it a few times you can see the positive side of it. What I get from this poem is that dreams are something that you really need to follow and believe in, because if you don't, then you may have missed a chance you may never get again.

He uses the metaphor "For if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly." I think this means that dreams are meant to be followed through, or else they were pointless to begin with.

I guess this poem is kind of depressing, but in a happy way. If that makes sense.
