Cadence and Rhythm

Setting The Stage
Cadence is the balanced, pitch or rhythmic flow of words in poetry. Music and poetry are intertwined for many poets, a relationship traceable to the poetic cadences of jazz, blues, and gospel music.

Response Stance
Invite students to explore the body-swaying rhythms, heartrending themes, and raw emotion of the blues. Respond to the rhythm and cadence of the blues verse; how does it reinforce the theme?
